Statement of the Prime Minister of Barbados on the Occasion of The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2025.
On this International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Barbados reflects on our historical partnership with the people of Palestine. Despite our geographical distance, the people of Barbados and Palestine are inextricably tied in the historical, global and contemporary struggle for self-determination, sovereignty, and freedom. Solidarity takes on true meaning with action. So, even as we witnessed the horrors unfolding in Gaza, Barbados last year formally recognized the State of Palestine and established diplomatic relations. A two state solution without two states is impossible and we cannot accept that Palestinian statehood should be conditional on anything other than the will of the Palestinian people. Since joining the United Nations upon our independence in 1966, Barbados has stood firm in advocating for the rights and for justice for Palestinian people through almost 60 years of UN resolutions, initiatives and diplomatic collaboration. We will continue to support all efforts made by UN bodies and Member States to provide humanitarian assistance and achieve an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the ending of Israeli occupation in the West Bank. Only then, and with the support of the region and the world, can the Palestinian people fully realize the sovereignty and self-determination to which they are entitled. Let us use this day to transform ideas and solidarity into tangible action and global change.
Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister;
Government of Barbados.
